Synopsis[]
John Hodgman, Paul F. Tompkins, and Arden Myrin join the 'boys for the second live episode of the Doughathon and review Taco Bell.
[This episode was recorded live on May 1, 2021, as part of the 25-hour Doughathon live stream. - ed.]
Nick's intro[]
The King of Comedy: today, better known as a title of a Scorsese film that formed the inspiration for Todd Phillips' Joker; for decades this was a nickname of an American entertainer known by his stage name, Jerry Lewis.
From the age of fifteen until his death at ninety-one, Lewis spent much of his life on stage and screen; first gaining fame as one-half of the Martin/Lewis act with heartthrob singer, Dean Martin; and later solo, as the star of broad comedies like The Disorderly Orderly and the original pre-Klumps Nutty Professor. Lewis's goofball antics gave him a rabid fandom in France, where he's known by another nickname, Le Roi Du Crazy. And speaking to his auteurist bonafides, as a director, he pioneered the now-omnipresent use of monitors to watch video playback of takes on set.
Lewis also pioneered a portmanteau of television and marathon - the telethon - with his series of televised fundraisers for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, beginning in 1966.
And though Lewis drew criticism later in life for perhaps exploiting the very people he was hoping to help, the financial impact of his efforts was undeniable, as his telethons raised an estimated $2.6 billion dollars in donations over six decades.
Will the Doughathon prove as successful?
Only time will tell if Burger Boy and Spoonman can compete with the man called The King of Comedy.
This week on Doughboys, as we close out the 2021 Doughathon, raising money for the Restaurant Workers Community Foundation, we return, for the second time in 24 hours, to Taco Bell.
Fork rating[]
First a recap of Doughboys' extensive history with Taco Bell:
- The first time the Doughboys visited Taco Bell was right away in episode 2, but they focused on breakfast items: Nick gave it 3 forks and Mitch gave it 5.
- Next, in episode 86, they were at a live show, and Nick gave it 4 forks and Mitch again gave it 5. Taco Bell finally made it into the Golden Plate Club.
- In the very next episode 87, they went again, with Nick again increasing his score to 4.5 and Mitch staying strong at 5 forks.
- In episode 149, Nick decides to officially bump his rating finally to 5 forks, putting Taco Bell in the Platinum Plate Club.
- In episode 156, Nick and Mitch again stand at 5 forks, but because of the guest's low rating, Taco Bell was dropped from both Platinum Plate and Golden Plate clubs.
- Taco Bell was reviewed for the fifth time as the opening of the 25-hour Doughathon, with Nick and Mitch continuing to hold on 5 forks, and Taco Bell returning to the Golden Plate Club. This episode's sixth visit was recorded at the closing of the 25-hour Doughathon event.
- (The 7th Taco Bell episode was, for some reason, released before this one.)
