Nick's intro[]
“You know, it's not often in life that you feel like you can make a difference. I'm able-bodied, I'm strong, I have a heart, and I care. And this is what I'm supposed to do today."
Steve Guttenberg
These remarks, amidst the catastrophic Los Angeles wildfires of early 2025, were made by a resident who’d bravely volunteered to help evacuate his neighbors - and as local news watchers learned in real time, that resident was actor Steve Guttenberg.
While he’d disappeared from the public eye in recent decades, Guttenberg was a go-to comedic lead in the 1980s: in hit films Three Men and a Baby, Cocoon, Short Circuit, and the long-running but much-derided Police Academy franchise - infamous for its gay jokes and toilet humor that would probably play pretty well on a podcast. But his fame dwindled and by the '90s, Guttenberg's most relevant pop-culture reference was The Simpsons insulting him in "The Stonecutters Song".
Still, it was an enviable run as a legitimate movie star — and it all began with a 1982 film set in Baltimore called Diner. The debut feature of director Barry Levinson, Guttenberg was part of an ensemble cast that also included star-making turns for Mickey Rourke, Kevin Bacon, and Ellen Barkin, and the dialog-driven adult drama drew upon nostalgia for 1950s Maryland diner culture.
And as the decade of the 1980s came to a close, restaurateur Bob Giaimo and chef Ype Von Hengst pulled from that same Maryland history to launch their own diner concept aiming to emulate the formula perfected largely by Greek-American immigrant families. Today with two dozen locations across Maryland, DC, Virginia, and New Jersey, co-founder Giaimo writes on its website, “We spent a year visiting over 500 diners across America seeking to understand the timeless appeal of this American icon."
With a heroic act of civic duty leading to renewed appreciation for his skill as a comedic actor, “timeless appeal of an American icon” could refer to Guttenberg himself.
This week on Doughboys… live from Washington, D.C…. Silver Diner.
Fork rating[]
The Doughboys at Silver Diner
The Doughboys have not reviewed Silver Diner before, but for one of the end-of-the-year Steak and Shake episodes during the pandemic, Nick, Mitch, and Susser were all in different parts of the country. They each went and ordered steaks and shakes from different places, and for that episode, Susser went to Silver Diner. Susser gave it 5 forks, but that rating was not considered canon.
