"Sbarro with Griffin Newman" is Episode 449 of Doughboys, hosted by Nick Wiger and Mike Mitchell. "Sbarro with Griffin Newman" was released on June 6, 2024.
Synopsis[]
Griffin Newman (@grifflightning, Blank Check) joins the 'boys to talk Irish movies, Star Wars characters, and Tombstone Garlic Bread Pizza (UPC: 7192114208) before a review of Sbarro. Plus, a new segment, Frank Check.
Nick's intro[]
“Oh, look! My favorite New York pizza place. I'm going to go get me a New York slice!”
This was Michael Scott on season two of The Office, as he excitedly approached a Manhattan outlet of a widely derided pizza chain. The confidently oblivious Michael Scott, portrayed by Steve Carrell, was the Yankee parallel of the original UK Office’s David Brent, portrayed by series co-creator Ricky Gervais, whose stance on religion is unknown. The joke was on Carrell’s character’s cluelessness and classlessness; that he’d view a strip-mall fixture as an authentic representation of New York-style pizza.
But Scott was, in a sense, correct: because decades before it became a readymade fast-food punchline, just as Arby’s was to The Simpsons and Seinfeld, Scott’s spot was an authentic Brooklyn salumeria launched in 1956 by married Italian immigrants. While modern consumers often assume the brand name is an invented paisano pastiche, it was in fact Napolitano co-founders Carmela and Gennaro’s legal last name. The shop’s slices were such a hit among its heavily Italian expat clientele that it spawned a second pizza-centric location, and in the 1970s, the popular parlor expanded to Brooklyn’s Kings Plaza Mall, establishing the template for its future food-court omnipresence.
Today, it’s hard to believe the chain began as an authentic stateside representation of Neapolitan-style pizza, with its bland aesthetic and 600 plus interchangeable restaurants. In the same way that The Office quietly began as a twelve-episode BBC Two series, before birthing an international sitcom franchise with versions in a dozen countries, the hit Office Ladies recap podcast, an annual Dunder Con fan expo, a million dollar Cameo account for the guy who played Kevin, and an absolutely necessary upcoming reboot.
This week on Doughboys… Sbarro.
Fork rating[]
This is the first full review of Sbarro on Doughboys, though it was a part of the Munch Madness: Slice is Right tournament. It lost its first round matchup to Blaze Pizza, and then lost in Fat Chance Kitchen as well.

The three of them all met at the Sbarro at the 7th & Fig location in downtown Los Angeles.
All the Sbarro chefs made the Spinach Stromboli too wet and the Marinara Sauce watery.
Tombstone (the pizza) part 2[]
Griffin had appeared on episode in 2020 where they reviewed Tombstone frozen pizza. (It was part of Tombstone Week.) At the time, Griffin wanted to find the Tombstone Garlic Bread Pizza, but was unable to find it at the time.
Tombstone contacted Griffin about getting it for him, but never followed up on it for years. Before this episode, he tried again; they told him to ask his store to order it using the UPC code (UPC: 7192114208). Griffin in turns ask the Doughboys audience everywhere to ask their store to stock it, so it becomes a nationwide product.
