"Salt & Straw with Neil Campbell and Andy Samberg" is Episode 426 of Doughboys, hosted by Nick Wiger and Mike Mitchell. "Salt & Straw with Neil Campbell and Andy Samberg" was released on December 7 2023.
Synopsis[]
Neil Campbell & Andy Samberg (Digman) join the 'boys to talk pizza, weddings, and Pink Floyd before a review of Salt & Straw. Plus, another edition of Jingle All The Whey.
Nick's intro[]
Boston, Oregon? It nearly happened. It came down to a series of coin flips that took place in 1845 between Pacific Northwest pioneers William Overton and Francis W. Pettygrove, each of whom wanted to name a fledgling Pacific Northwest settlement after his New England hometown.
It’s difficult to fathom the asynchronous alternate reality where Oregon’s NBA franchise is the Boston Trailblazers, and Fred Armisen’s sketch series is called Bostonia. Would Boston, Oregon still have its much commented upon twee hipster quality, or would the gravitational pull of the name alone have drawn it more toward the crasser, baser, rage-fueled character of the Massachusetts city? These hypotheticals will remain hypothetical, because Pettygrove prevailed, and the future metropolis would be named Portland.
By the end of the 20th century, Portland, Oregon would easily surpass its Maine forefather in both population and cultural relevance, including developing a vibrant food scene.
And the West Coast Portland is where cousins Kim and Tyler Malek opened an ice-cream cart in 2011, based more on gumption than know-how. A brick-and-mortar soon followed and today the Stumptown scoop shop has three dozen locations across the West Coast, plus restaurants in tourist epicenters like Las Vegas and Disney Springs, Orlando.
The unique name of this artisan churning-cousins collab derives from the raw materials used to produce the test batches of its original flavors. One might speculate that the alternate reality Boston, Oregon version would be called Pepper & Hay... but we don’t live in that reality.
This week on Doughboys, here on Earth Prime... Salt & Straw.
