Synopsis[]

Writer and Bay Area native Tiffany Do (Food Republic) joins for a spirited discussion about the best New York dining, our most memorable NYC meals, and how east coast eats stack up against west. Recorded in New York City.

New Pork City[]

On this trip to NYC, The Doughboys ate some food. There doesn't seem to be much form to this episode, so I'll just note some of the NYC stuff they bring up. (They do also discuss some spots in LA and San Francisco as well as numerous other topics like beer and breakfast.) They recorded this episode in a hotel room.

They begin by talking about their visit together to Speedy Romeo, a pizza place in the Lower East Side. They ordered a corn pizza (possibly the Dick Dale) and the St. Louie pizza.

Tiffany offers a few of her top choices for NYC restaurants: Mission Chinese Food, Gladys Carbibean Kitchen, and Vanessa's Dumpling House. She also suggests Zabar's for charcuterie and her pizza-by-the-slice choices are 2 Bros. Pizza and some little stall on West 4th.

Mitch said he was planning to go to Ess-a-bagel and Katz's Deli.

Nick recalls Pizza 33 and Harry & Ida's from prior visits to NYC, and how some fans told them about Dough Boys Pizza.

Lastly, they share their all-time favorite NYC meals:

  • Nick's was a cheap hot-dog place called Chelsea Papaya
  • Mitch loves the pastrami sandwich at Katz's Deli
  • Tiffany recalls getting food from a halal cart and sneaking it into a closed bank to eat it

Quotes[]

I think at this point, your blood type is marinara. They'd be like 'you're high in oregano.'

–Nick Wiger, to Mitch

Mitch: Why was there a pillow in the closet standing up against the wall?

Nick: You think I'm sleeping upright, draining into an oilpan? If I was a robot, why would I sleep at all? Wouldn't I just recharge and plug myself into the wall and keep going?
Mitch: Well, that's what I think you were doing.

–Mitch sizing up Nick's hotel room

Mitch: Speaking of Julie and Julia, if there was a Doughboys movie like that, who do you think would play us?

Nick: Maybe like a Patrick Stewart.
Mitch Jared Fogle as Young Wiger, and Old Wiger? Larry King. How about for me?
Nick: I would say, Young Mitch... the Kool-Aid Man. And Old Mitch, Paul Prudhomme.
Mitch: Good casting.
