Synopsis[]
We kick off this year's Munch Madness: Tournament of Chompions (Mouth of the Border, Hollywood vs Heartland Region) with Farley Elliott as we compare Green Burrito/Red Burrito to Poquito Mas.
Nick's intro[]
Hawaiian Gardens, California - 1980: A Puerto Rican immigrant named Ruben Rodriguez buys a local Mexican eatery and revamps its menu, growing it into a small chain. In 1992, Rodriguez forms an alliance with Arby's to launch co-branded restaurants and two years later upgrades partners to dual-named burger megalith Carl's Jr./Hardee's.
Studio City, California - 1984: Lifelong Angeleno, Kevin McCarney, opened a taqueria inspired by trips to Baja California. With its fresh ingredients and abundance of healthy seafood- and veggie-based options, it grows within the greater LA area and becomes a go-to for office work lunches.
Both of these Mexican-food eateries originate in SoCal strip malls, but while one spread to 500 outlets nationwide via its big brother, Carl, the other is so married to Tinseltown, there's a location literally on the Warner Bros. Studio lot.
Which of these 'Mexican for Caucasian' concepts will prevail in a taco/burrito tag-team throwdown?!
This week on Doughboys, the first match-up of the opening round of Munch Madness: The Tournament of Chompions: Mouth of the Border: Hollywood vs. Heartland Region - Green Burrito/Red Burrito vs. Poquito Más.
Let's a-go!
Munch Madness: Mouth of the Border Rules[]
This year's Tournament rules:
- Sides stay on the sidelines.
- Drinks are in the Gatorade jug, also on the sidelines.
- Each chain gets one taco and one burrito, but the style can be eater's choice: crunchy/soft, any kind of protein, etc.
- Scoring is based on referee stripes: 5 white stripes available for tacos, 5 black stripes available for burritos.
- Also one restaurant will get a Golden Whistle for having the better chips and salsa.
The loser is sent to The Ref, Dennis Leary, to feed to Bruce the Shark from Jaws who will eat anything; but there will again be a Fat Chance Kitchen opportunity to return to the competition.
