Synopsis[]
Zach Cherry (Fallout, Severance) joins the 'boys to talk dietary changes, smashburgers, and NYC eats before a review of Jimmy John's Picklewich. Plus, the debut of Food in this Dude.
Nick's intro[]
Vlasic Stork
According to the USDA, which as of this recording has not been permanently shuttered, Americans consume on average nine pounds of pickles per year. And the biggest pickle purveyor in this brined cucumber-crazed country is a century-old Michigan brand founded by a Croatian-American immigrant named Frank Vlasic.
While Vlasic the company was originally built around milk and cheese, Frankβs son Joe eventually realized its bread and butter was bread and butter β pickles, that is (along with other varietals). Over time, pickles completely took over Vlasicβs corporate identity, and eventually, Joe along with his son Bob ditched the dairy entirely β itβs cleaner.
And in 1974, looking for brand iconography for the now pickle-sclusive business, the Vlasic heirs settled on a stork β the connection being pregnant womenβs common craving for the snack. With an identity inspired/ripped off of Groucho Marx to a seemingly legally actionable degree, the Vlasic Stork marketing campaigns took the company to new heights β and today the unnamed bird endures as one of foodβs most identifiable mascots.
In October of this year, a different eponymous food business β a sandwich chain famed for its freaky fast subs β capitalized on American pickle fandom by resuscitating its pickle-based menu, featuring pickle-bunned sandos and pickle chips.
Of course, stork is the kind of animal its founder, Jimmy John, would have gunned down for sport. But hey, considering you canβt even watch pro sports these days without enriching asshole billionaires, totalitarian petrostates, and predatory gambling services, who cares if you gotta toss a big-game hunter whoβs a major GOP donor some coin to eat a sandwich with pickle buns? Itβs all owned by private equity anyway.
This week on Doughboysβ¦ we return to Jimmy Johnβs, for the Picklewich.
Pickle rating[]
Nick, Uruk-hai Cherry, Mitch
This is the third review of Jimmy John's by the Doughboys. First, back in episode 99, Nick gave it 3.5 forks and Mitch 2.5. Then in 2024, they returned and Nick gave it 4 forks and Mitch 3.5.
Jimmy John's also lost in the first round of Hero's Journey: Sub-Optimal π₯ͺ, and then lost in Fat Chance Kitchen too.
For this episode, they focus on Jimmy John's Picklewich menu: a variety of sandwiches with pickles instead of bread. They rate the menu on a scale of 0-5 Pickles.
| guest / host | ordered | rating |
|---|---|---|
| Nick Wiger |
|
2 Pickles (1 Pickle, 10 Gherkins) |
| Mike Mitchell | 1.5 Pickles (1 Pickle, 5 Gherkins) | |
| Zach Cherry | 2.32 Pickles |
Mitch didn't like any of the sandwiches because they were too wet and the 'innards' slide around. Nick and Mitch thought their least favorite was the Veggie Picklewich, while Zach refused to eat that one. Zach's favorite was the Tuna, and Mitch's favorite was the Vito. They did all love the Pickle Jimmy Chips.
The score is just for the Picklewich menu and not the full chain. Also to note, Zach gave the Tuna Picklewich a 3.9 (3 Pickles, 9 Gherkins) and all the other five 2 Pickles. I averaged that out and his overall Picklewich score was thus 2.32.
