Dawn Burger's intro[]
“ |
One, two, three o'clock, four o'clock rock |
” |
So begins the song "Rock Around the Clock," a mega-hit recorded and released in 1954 by Bill Haley and His Comets, the band's name a knowing wink at periodic Earth visitor, Halley's comet. The largely-forgotten Bill Haley's group was a force in the early popularization of the music genre in the U.S. The website History of Rock characterizes their first big single as "the song that introduced rock and roll to white America" and their cover of "Shake, Rattle, and Roll" includes what some consider to be rock's first guitar solo.
And so when the '50s throwbacks sitcom Happy Days premiered in 1974, it was fitting that "Rock Around the Clock" would serve as the theme song for its first season (discarded for a unique theme for later seasons).
And it was similarly fitting that a primary setting for Happy Days would be Arnold's, a diner.
A product largely of the booming post-World War II economy, standalone diners and diner chains popped up around the country alongside interstate highways and tract housing, serving patrons around the clock, from early-morning laborers to late-night drunken revelers, and becoming a favorite hangout of teenagers.
In 1958, a quartet of investors, Al and Jerry Lapin and Al and Trudy Kallis jumped on board the diner trend, opening a sit-down restaurant in Toluca Lake, California - the same San Fernando Valley neighborhood as diner-chain pioneer, Bob's Big Boy. With a distinct blue A-frame and a focus on breakfast favorites, the business was franchising just two short years after launch and, as it expanded over the decades, came to found or acquire other prominent brands such as Orange Julius and Applebee's.
Today with over 1800 worldwide locations, living up to its international moniker, under normal circumstances, "Rock Around the Clock" could very well describe this now acronymed pancake-profferers 24-hours of operation.
This week on Doughboys, we begin Rockaroundtheclockdoughberfest, our month-long tour of 24-hour chains, as we return to IHOP.
Rockaroundtheclockdoughberfest Rules[]

A couple years later, they revisited, with Nick sticking with his 4 forks and Mitch dropping slightly to 3.25. They then returned when IHOP had briefly rebranded as IHOb and introduced a burger menu and they both gave it 3.75 forks.

Family Food[]
In Family Food, Nick finds a food-related survey, and Mitch and the guest guess the results.
For this episode, Nick has a list of the six most popular pancake toppings in the UK.
Three wrong answers eliminates you.
Mitch's guesses | Dan's guesses |
---|---|
Butter (X) | Clotted Cream (X) |
Maple Syrup (3rd)Golden Syrup (5th) | Bacon (X) |
Honey (6th) | Sugar (2nd) |
Blueberries (X) | Whipped Cream (X) |
Applesauce (X) | Jelly (X) |
Shaky Floofs (X) |
Mitch wins because Dan had 3 X's first, but they continued to guess. The other two remaining answers were #1 Lemon and #4 Chocolate Spread.
But when Dan reminds Nick that Lemon = Jelly, he is declared the winner!

“ | Anything for you to just say the words 'dry rub,' you fucking freak. | ” |
–Mike Mitchell creeped out by Nick |
“ | You guys both said "Wow" in harmony. | ” |

The Feedbag[]
“ | I was talking with some friends the other day when the topic of ciabatta bread came up and how it appeared to be out of nowhere one day. We found out it was invented in Italy in 1982 as a competitor to French baguettes. What we thought was a rustic old world creation is actually the same age as me and The Spoonman.
How does this make you feel? Angry that you were fed a false narrative about ciabatta? Or hopeful that a new food can be invented every day? Are there any other food frauds out there? |
