Nick's intro[]

Queereyesg

Queer Eye for the Straight Guy

In 2003, American television viewers were introduced to Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, a makeover reality show where heterosexual men have their lives transformed by a quintet of gay hosts, "The Fab Five." Each had his own specialty: Ted focused on food, Kyan grooming, Jay culture, breakout Carson handled fashion, and Tom was tasked with interior design (completely remodeling guests' apartments in a visibly unfair division of labor).

The show was the first mainstream hit for Bravo, leading the network to completely shift formats from high-brow fare liked filmed British stage plays and Inside the Actors Studio to focus instead on reality TV; today with hit franchises like Top Chef, Vanderpump Rules, and countless Real Housewives of various municipalities.

But Queer Eye's impact was more significant than transforming the fate of a deep cable channel. In a much more homophobic America that would go on to re-elect George W. Bush with a popular-vote majority, it made stars out of openly gay men and made straight men everywhere comfortable with concepts like using conditioner and matching their shirts to their socks.

But the Queer Eye cast weren't the only fivesome to burst on the scene in 2003! That same year, the Murrell sons - Jim, Matt, Chad, Ben, and Tyler - would begin franchising the Virginia burger chain cofounded by their parents. The collective namesake of their family company, the Murrell sons each have their own Queer Eye-style specialty. As per Papa Jim Murrell,* "Matt and Jim travel the country visiting stores, Chad oversees training, Ben selects the franchisees, and Tyler runs the bakery."

The East Coast burgery quickly attained national prominence and would become a personal favorite of fellow DC-area resident, President Barack Obama.

In 2018, Netflix rebooted Queer Eye with a similar format, but a new cast for a new generation of viewers. But at the Murrell's burger chain, which now has over 1500 locations, the original fab five of sons still steers the ship.

This week on Doughboys, we return to Five Guys.

Fork rating[]

The first time the Doughboys reviewed Five Guys was back in 2016, when Nick and Mitch each gave it 3.5 forks. They also both retroactively raised their score to 4 forks in (separate) later episodes.

Five Guys also had a wild trip through the 2016 Burger Brawl. In a play-in episode, Nick and Mitch split the Five Guys and Burger King vote, so Evan Susser had to break the tie and Five Guys lost. In the next episode, however, Nick and Mitch remained angry at Susser for being a deciding factor, so they toss Five Guys into the Burger King/Steak 'n Shake battle anyway. Five Guys this time beats both. Susser than jumps in again and decides that Five Guys, as the winner, has to battle Shake Shack, which was not originally part of the Burger Brawl. They again split the vote, but Shake Shack advanced over Five Guys anyway.

Quotes[]

Five Guys. It sounds like a Scorsese movie. I wanna know more about the Five Guys, honestly! It's a bit of a mystery.

–Mike Mitchell

A storm was starting. I got out of my car, right at a red light. And when I opened the door, the wind blew my hat off, it raised above my head. But I caught it! I looked over and there was a woman stopped at the red light and she was laughing at me!

–Mike Mitchell re: getting his Five Guys order

Don't get me wrong. If you walked into my bedroom in my apartment in Los Angeles, there would be peanut shells all over the floor. That's why I go to a restaurant! I don't want them all over a floor there. (And same thing with my bedroom. Yes, there will be sacks of potatoes laying around.)

–Mike Mitchell re: not liking the Five Guys decor

Nick: Panda Express, which we went to last week, had a fantastic pick-up system for keeping everything distanced.

Mitch: Nick and I actually got vaccinated when we went to Panda Express.
Andy: By a technician in a panda costume!

The Feedbag[]

Now that the Orange Buffoon is out of the office and President Biden has removed the Diet Coke button from the Oval Office, I have a question.

If there was a button on your remote that you could press that brings one food or drink item to you automatically for the rest of your life, what would it be?
