The origins of caffeine as a drug are disputed. Some trace it to the mountains near what is now called Mexico City, but used to be called Tenochtitlán, where beans were harvested and turned into a beverage known as coffee.
Today, people the world over consume coffee and tea to get their morning caffeine, but in the early 21st century, a new approach emerged, emulating the soft drinks that were commonly consumed with fast-food meals, but also incorporating sports drinks. And so emerged, the energy drink.
Massive brands like Red Bull, Monster, and Rock Star emerged from whole cloth and, today, dominate the market share while new contenders continue to come on the scene. But which energy drink gives you the most zip for your zop?
