Synopsis[]

Writer and comedian Christine Nangle (Inside Amy Schumer, Kroll Show) returns to discuss American soft serve icon Dairy Queen and blindside Mitch and Wiger with some big surprises. The Simpsons executive producer Matt Selman joins for a stackable Snack or Wack. Recorded live at the Los Angeles Podcast Festival.

Nick's intro[]

Thatcher

Margaret Thatcher

On April 8, 2013, Margaret Thatcher aka The Iron Lady, who had served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom for the entirety of the 1980s, paralleling Ronald Reagan's conservative Presidency, died of a stroke at the age of 87. The next week, she would receive an official state funeral which was met by hundreds of hecklers and protesters, many of whom turned their back on the procession, still bitter over her economically ruinous policies of deregulation, privatization, and union-busting.

But back in the 1950s, decades prior to her divisive stewardship over the UK, Thatcher made an unquestionably positive contribution to society. While working as a chemist for J. Lyons and Co., she helped develop an emulsifier used in the production of soft-serve ice cream.

Over in the former British colony of the United States, a revolutionary war of sorts would take place over this creamier, airier version of the frozen treat. The combatants: Tom Carvel of Carvel Ice Cream and Illinois-based John Fremont McCullough, who went by the nickname, Grandpa.

Though both their brands endure to this day, it was Grandpa McCullough's focus on creating a restaurant with a menu of sweet treats and hot food that ultimately put his company on top, his franchises becoming a fixture in the American South and Midwest. In 1985, his stores would introduce The Blizzard, a concrete-like concoction swirled with candy mix-ins that is perhaps its signature creation.

Now with over 4800 domestic locations here in America, McCullough's legacy is the only Queen we recognize.

This week on Doughboys: Dairy Queen.

If anyone can guess Mitch's mom's phone number, you get a Doughboys t-shirt.

–Christine Nangle

Nick: One thing we can both agree on: FUCK THE INDIAN OCEAN!
*Mitch and Nick try to high five*

–The Doughboys

I love the showmanship when they flip that Blizzard upside-down. What a nice bit of flair that is. It's like Tom Cruise in Cocktail.

–Nick Wiger

I just want to say 'hi-dee-ho' to Spoon Nation and 'hi-dee-ho' to Burger Boy Nation, as well. This is Corinne, Mike's mom, and I just can't wait till you stop doing the show and move home. Chewie, we're home!

(You know I'm not allowed to listen to it. Did you know that?)

The Feedbag[]

They call them "crisps" because it's illegal to call them "chips" because Lay's had a law written that because they are not potato slices, they're not chips.

Also, the texture they have is scientifically-developed to make you hungrier to eat more Pringles.

–Mr. Pringle (Lance)

This has been a subject of much debate between (me and my fiancee), about Dairy Queen specifically. If you're a Dairy Queen employee and someone walks up to you and says "I would like a plain Blizzard," and you have no additional context, what are you putting in this Blizzard?

–Emily
