Synopsis[]

Jon Gabrus and Adam Pally (101 Places To Party Before You Die) join the 'boys to discuss their new show and food on set before a review of Burger King. Plus, another edition of Last Meal.

Nick's intro[]

I suggested that we call our product a Whopper, knowing that this would convey imagery of something big.

Mclamorebk

Jim McLamore

These are the words of Jim McLamore, co-founder of the nation’s second-largest burger chain, describing in his autobiography the conception of his company’s signature hamburger sandwich.

First launched in 1957 for sale at 37 cents, the Whopper celebrates its 65th anniversary this year (naturally at a much higher price point), but the burgery that slings this beefy big boy has no plans for retirement: it remains the brand-defining offering of this Pepsi of hamburger joints.

And though the rest of its menu has evolved over the years, reacting to various industry trends — the current Ch’King line reflects the ongoing Chick-fil-A-style chicken-sandwich craze — the Florida-founded fast-food franchise has remained a Whopper-centric universe. Over the years, the chain has auditioned variations on the theme: some sticking around, like the Papa Bear-sized Double Whopper and Baby-Bear Whopper Jr, and more recently, the wildly successful plant-based Impossible Whopper. Others have had less esteemed runs: the Iron Man 2-themed Whiplash Whopper, the Microsoft tie-in Windows 7 Whopper, and the viral-for-the-wrong-reasons Halloween Whopper, whose black bun allegedly dyed post-meal BMs Frankenstein green.

So does its newest Southwest varietal have the rare staying power to turn from one-off to regular offering?

Whatever the response, six decades of history tell us the original Whopper will still remain, and you’ll still be able to 'Have It Your Way.'

This week on Doughboys… we return, once again, to Burger King.

Fork rating[]

Burger King has been reviewed on the show five previous times, and it has also been a part of most Tournament of Chompions.

The first review was in 2015 when Nick gave it 3 forks and Mitch 3.5. Two years later, Nick gave Burger King 1 fork and Mitch gave it 2 and it qualified for the Broken Plate Club. Two years after that, they returned to try the Impossible Whopper and they each rated it 3.5 forks. The next trip Nick and Mitch each gave it 4 forks. Lastly, they went in 2021, and both of them rated Burger King 4.5 forks and it finally made the Golden Plate Club.

It was part of the tumult of the first Burger Brawl, the Chicken Fight, Pie Noon, and a number of other Doubles to try various new items.

Today, they return to Burger King to review of the new Southwest Bacon Whopper (though this episode counts as a full review).

Last Meal[]

In Last Meal, the guests choose which foods they would eat in their final meal on death row.

Gabrus and Pally

Mitch describes their death sentence: The year is 2035. They have visited all 101 Places To Party Before You Die, but in their contract it says they must die after hitting all 101 places.

For Jon Gabrus' last meal, he picks:

  • Chicken Club with side of hot sauce from My Hero Deli in Long Island
  • Chocolate milk

For Adam Pally's last meal, he picks:

  • cheese pizza from Upside Pizza in New York
  • full caviar bar from Russian Tea Room in New York
  • Martini

Fortunately, the Impractical Jokers declare their death sentence was a prank! Everyone lives.

I recently got back from my honeymoon to Italy with my lovely wife, Lauren, and had a lot of amazing food. I want to know, if you could travel to any country in the world to experience their cuisine in person in an authentic setting, where would you go?
