Synopsis[]

Sierra Katow (Last Comic Standing, Earth To Ned) joins the 'boys to talk late-night eats, Toomgis and convenience store chain ampm. Plus, another edition of Fake Chews.

Nick's intro[]

Gritty

Gritty

In 2018, the NHL's Philadelphia Flyers introduced their mascot Gritty, a giant orange creature of ambiguous species with a frozen look of elation on its face. Gritty instantly became beloved among not just the Flyers' faithful, but throughout the entire sports world as fans connected with his unique character design and mannerisms.

But two years prior to Gritty's debut on the ice, a convenience-store chain introduced a mascot who bears a striking resemblance to the Flyers' number-one fan (or should we say vice versa): Toomgis, a hulking monstrosity composed of snack foods stitched together and given life.

Toomgis, whose name is short for "Too Much Good Stuff," the convenience store's slogan, became the focus of the chain's marketing, factoring prominently in signage and starring in a series of TV commercials where customers are unnerved by his monstrous gollum-like form. And the store's website cheekily serves up a series of Chuck Norris-esque factoids about their mascot such as "Toomgis became the accidental inventor of the man bun when he needed a place to put his sandwich down."

The chain, one of many regional runners-up behind sector kingpin 7-Eleven, has a name that implies its open-ended hours of operation and is primarily located in the western United States. First opened in 1978 in Southern California, and owned by petroleum goliath BP, today it has over 1100 gas station-adjacent locations across North and South America.

But do its food and drink offerings in fact live up to its mascot's portmanteau-named promise of 'too much good stuff'?

This week on Doughboys, we continue Rockaroundtheclockdoughberfest, our month-long tour of 24-hour chains with ampm.

Fake Chews 📰[]

In Fake Chews, Nick presents food trivia and Mitch and the guest guess which is food fact and which is food fiction.

For this episode, the theme was Convenience Stores. Nick gives a name and they have to guess if it is either a Scandinavian convenience store or a cat medication.

clue Mitch Sierra actual
Alepa cat medication store
Narvesen cat medication store
Baytril cat medication cat medication
Clindamycin cat medication cat medication
Pressbyran cat medication store
Drontal store cat medication
Metopid (?) store store
Diltiazem cat medication cat medication
Irmacity store store

Mitch wins 3-2!

To note: Narvesen is actually a Norwegian store, while Nick claims Sierra's guess of medicine was correct, and gave her a point for it. Conversely, Clindamycin is actually a cat medication, which Sierra guessed, yet Nick claims it is a Norwegian store. -ed.
